Alexander Chalmers (Alec) Bannerman was born in Paddington, New South Wales on 21 Mar 1854, the youngest son of William and Margaret Bannerman.[1] [2]

A distinguished cricketer, Alec made his Test debut against England at Melbourne in 1879, joining brother Charles, his senior by eight years, in the Australian team. He was a member of the first Australian eleven, who toured England on six occasions from 1878, including the famous Ashes tour of 1882.[3] Described as a 'stonewall batsman', he was also known for his skill as a fieldsman. [4] Of particular renown is his success in the last innings of the 1882 match when he caught out W.G. Grace, turning the match around.[3]

As a batsman, Alec played in 28 Tests and scored 1108 runs, with a highest score of 94 and average of 23.08. He played 219 first class matches, scoring 7816 runs, with a highest score of 134 and average of 22.14. As a bowler Alec took 4 wickets for 163 runs in Test matches and 22 wickets for 656 runs in first class cricket.[3]

After retiring as an active player, he was the official coach of the NSW Cricket Association at one stage, [5] and continued to support and advise young players, including Victor Trumper.[4]

Alec married Mary Ann (Annie) Merrifield on 4 Mar 1884 in Sydney. Annie was the eldest daughter of George Merrifield of Darlington. [6][2]

He passed away in 1924.[7][8]
