He lived in Jefferson, Iowa at the time of his enlistment into the Union Army. George was 22 years old when he enlisted on 9 August 1862. He was mustered into company G, 30th Regiment, Iowa Infantry on 14 September 1862.[3]
After the Siege of Vicksburg, Pvt. Bankhead died of disease at Black River Bridge, Mississippi. He is buried in the Vicksburg National Cemetery in an unknown grave.
