Biography

The suffix "Jr" was connected with James' name at the time of his death in 1809 on the inventory and appraisement for his estate. Whether this indicates his father was named James Sr we cannot say at this time because in an 1834 Nicholas County, Kentucky deed among James Jr's heirs his name was listed as James Anderson Sr. This may have been done because he had a son James that would be Jr too. All very confusing but there might have been three generations of James'.

The earliest records for James Anderson, Jr. (later referred to as Sr) of Nicholas County, Kentucky were researched by Sherry Howard who found he died a soon after moving there. She was surprised to find there was an unrecorded nuncupative will for James among the courthouse documents. His sons were mentioned but not named. Sherry's search for "bound papers" for the underage sons were fruitless. [1]

Prior to his move to Nicholas County, Kentucky James Anderson was on the tax list for Woodford County, Kentucky in 1791 and 1792 along with George, Henry, John, Joseph and William Anderson. Woodford County had been created in 1788 from Fayette County, Kentucky where the 1787 tax list showed a James Anderson with no property. [2]

James Anderson married Sarah Kersey on 11 June1792 in Woodford County, Kentucky. Bondsman was Joseph Pulham (who may be the same Joseph Pulliam who died of cholera in 1833 Fayette County, Kentucky). The marriage was performed by Rev. James Dupuy. (The Bond says Sarah Carsey and the minister's marriage return has Salley Kersey.) [3] The minister, James Dupuy, and his brother John Dupuy were among the earliest ministers in Kentucky. They came in 1784. One of the churches they organized (1788) was Buck Run Baptist Church in Woodford County, Kentucky. [4]

James Anderson is on the Nicholas Co. Ky Tax List 1800-1808 with about 50 acres on Somerset Creek. In 1809 Sally Anderson is listed with this acreage. The land (46 acres) had been purchased by James Anderson on 20 February 1802.[5] Additional Andersons found by researcher Sherry Howard on "Delinquent Tax Lists" include the following: John Anderson, 1802, went to Harrison County, Kentucky; Thomas Anderson, 1819?, went to Ohio; George Anderson, 1809, went to Fleming County, Kentucky; Noah Anderson, 1816, "run away"; and George Anderson, 1817, Indiana. Nicholas County, Kentucky Stray Books show the location where these Andersons resided was Summerset (sic Somerset) Creek. [6]

Two other Anderson's were in Nicholas County and one of them who resided on Somerset Creek was George Anderson (born 1745 and died 1828 in Indiana). George had been in Woodford Co Kentucky on the tax list for 1791-1792 along with James and George, James, and John were in the 1800 tax list for Nicholas Co., KY. George (wife Jane Presberry) purchased 100 acres of land on Somerset [sic Summerset] Creek in 1801 from John Fowler the same person James purchased from in 1802. John purchased 152 acres of land on Cedar Creek in Nicholas County in 1801. George had 180 acres on Somerset Creek until 1808 and John (wife Susannah) had 300 acres on Cedar Creek as late as 1817. It is possible George, James and John were related. [7]

James died about 1809 when an inventory, appraisal and sale for his estate was recorded in Nicholas County, Kentucky. [8][9]

Estate Settlement for the land of James Anderson Jr was made in 1836. [10]

  11. E-mails from Kerri Kaczynski received 18 May 2019 and 27 Apr 2024. Kerry stated: I compared your kit on GEDmatch, which did not match to me, but did match my aunt (A071004), uncle (A858237) and second cousin. Also, my second cousin (A208367) has done the Y-700 y-DNA test at FtDNA. This narrows his haplogroup from the extremely broad R-M269 to R-BY43543. His biological father was Anderson but coincidentally his step father's name is Anderton which is very confusing.
