Biography

Lucretia Anderson[1]

Lucretia, daughter of Thomas Anderson (whose will was proved in March 1553/4) and Katherine Hopton (whose will was proved in 1598/9).[1]
Lucretia Anderson married at St. Mary Colechurch, London 29 Feb 1565/6 Edmund Bressey, Esq., Citizen and haberdasher of London, of St. Dionis Backchurch, London, and Nettleden, Buckinghamshire, son and heir of Ralph Bressey and Margaret Massey.[1] The Visitations of Bedfordshire describe her husband as a citizen of London.[2] They lived at Nettleden, Buckinghamshire.[1]
Lucretia died 4 Jun 1610. Edmund died 7 Nov 1612. They were buried at Nettleden, Buckinghamshire.[1]

Children

Lucretia Anderson and her husband Edmund Bressey had four sons and one daughter:[1]
  • Thomas Bressey[1]
  • Edmund Bressey, Gent.[1][2]
  • Thomas Bressey (again)[1]
  • Isaac Bressey[1]
  • Katherine Bressey[1]

Memorial Inscription

There is a marble memorial to Lucretia and her husband in the church of Nettoeden, Buckinghamshire. On it are the arms of Bressey and Bressey impaling Anderson. They are depicted facing each other in the attitude of prayer; their five children appear, in a smaller scale, on a lower surface. The inscription reads: "Here is Entombed the Bodies of Edmund Bressey late of London Esquire the third brother of the Elder House of that name in the Countye Palatine of Chester and Lucretia his Wife Sister to Sr Henry Anderson late of London Kt. the ffather of Sr. Richard Anderson of Penlee in the County of Hertford Knight they lyved the greatest part of theyr Tyme in London and departed this Life at Nettleden in the County of Buckingham vz Lucretia Bressy the 4th Daye of June Ano Dni 1610, and Edmund Bressy deceased the 7 Daye of Noveber Ano Domini 1612, they had Issue foure Sonnes and one Daughter and of them theyr second Sonn Edmund Bressye now alone lyvinge."[3][4]

Research Notes

The Harleian Society edition of the Visitations of Bedfordshire names Lucretia as Katherine.[2] This may be a confusion with her mother. The memorial inscription quoted above makes clear her name was Lucretia.[4]

Thanks, Ann. These records may, as you say, well be Lucretia. My eyesight is not up to deciphering what these astrological consultations say, but is there anything so significant that it warrants a mention on this profile? Astrological consultations were not unusual, and often not for anything particularly noteworthy.

Possibly only the last one where her son requested some medical treatment for her on 8 May 1610 so not long before she died.

As this profile is in a trail identified by Douglas Richardson from a Gateway Ancestor to a Magna Carta Surety Baron, I have made the Magna Carta Project a manager.
