Edwin John Alley was born in 1881, the son of Edward Alley and Eliza Shephardbottom. [1] His Attestation/Enlistment papers list his place of birth as St. Arnaud in Victoria.
Edwin John Alley, known as Ted was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Some AFL sources also list his nickname as Ned Alley. He also played for 151 games for the Williamstown Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1905 to 1915.
Edwin John Alley enlisted into the A.I.F. on the 2nd February 1916, and embarked for Europe on the 6th of June 1916 on the HMAT A62 Wandilla. Arriving just in time in London to be selected for the Third Australian Divisional Squad in the 1916 Pioneer Australian Rules Exhibition Game played on Saturday the 28th of October 1916. [2]
In 1919, Edwin John Alley married Elizabeth Wilding.[3]
He passed away in 1949, aged 67. [4] at his Canterbury, Victoria residence on 18 July 1949.
