Biography

• Elijah's father John Adams, the son of Jonathan and Barbara Barber Lay Adams, was the second son, but his older brother, Jonathan, died young, and he in inherited all the real estate. The name of his wife is not certainly known, but she was probably Mary, daughter of Peter Covenhoven. For a discussion of the question, see Vol. 80, page 245, of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. He had his estate re-surveyed in 1767, and in 1770 conveyed equal parts of it to his sons John, Jonathan, and Elijah. He did not leave a will; so the names of his daughters are unknown. His farm lay between what is known as the Delilah Road and the School House Road, extending from Jonathan’s Thoroughfare, which derived its name from him, to the New Road.

• (The name is regularly spelled "Addoms"). He received one-third of his father's real estate by deed of gift in 1770. He served in the Gloucester County militia during the Revolution. September 24. 1770, he sold the land he had received from his father to Joseph Covenover. His wife. Elizabeth, joins in the deed. He died intestate in 1801, leaving an only child and heir Jeremiah. *His widow married a Whiley.
• Jeremiah, married Elizabeth Lee. and had a son, Japhet. The late Theophilu< Lee Adams, of Ocean City, was a descendant of Elijah Adams.
