Biography

Robert Adams is Notable.

Robert Dudley Sidney Powys Adams was a businessman, journalist, and poet in colonial Australia.

Robert Dudley Sidney Powys Herbert, later Adams, was born at sea on board the Rotterdam packet boat between the 9th of July and the 29th of July, 1829. His mother was making a return journey to England from Holland.^[1][2]

According to his obituary, he eloped with Lavinia Amelia Goodrich when her parent or guardian would not give permission for their marriage.^[3] They married in London in 1846.

Soon after his arrival in Sydney he joined a firm later known as "Messrs. Ford, Adams & Co., customs and shipping agents, which flourished and expanded following the discovery of gold.^[3]

In the 1860s and 70s he regularly published poems in The Australian Town and Country Journal and The Empire under the name "R.A." In 1882 he published a book of poetry entitled "The song of the stars : and other poems" under the pen name Alpha Crucis.^[4]

He died at his home Fernlee, Balmain, on the 5th of April, 1912, aged 82,^[5] and was buried in the Field of Mars cemetery, East Ryde.^[6]
