Samuel Adams was born in Halifax County, Virginia, on 5 June 1805, the son of Sylvester and Rebecca (Boyd) Adams.

Samuel married Rebecca May, a daughter of Capt. John May on 16 December 1824. Samuel and Rebecca had four children that lived to maturity, John D., Jesse M., Martha Isabella, and Collin.

In 1830 Samuel Adams and a number of relatives moved to Johnson County in the Territory of Arkansas where he soon became a prominent politician. He represented his county and district in each branch of the legislature several times. He was president of the Senate several times. He was elected State treasurer and became the state’s governor in 1844. He moved to Little Rock which became his home.

His wife Rebecca died in 1840, and in 1842 he married Mrs. Catherine A. Fagan, a widow. There were no children born to them, however.

Gov. Samuel Adams died 27 February 1850 while on a visit to a plantation he owned in Saline County, Arkansas. He is buried in Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas.[4][5]
