Elizabeth Brane - in need of a little untangling

The profile of Elizabeth Brane of Sussex has been adopted by the England Project and needs some untangling, as she has ended up with two concurrent husbands:

Richard Chatfield of Sussex who is probably the correct one and

Henry Meacham or Machin of Gloucestershire

She also has two overlapping sets of children in Sussex and Gloucestershire, and a random one from Somerset added in for good measure.

I propose to unlink Henry and all the Machin/Meacham children from Elizabeth.

The England Project's Sussex and Gloucestershire County teams can then work on each family individually to verify dates, places and children. It may well be that Henry is a conflation of two different men.

Elizabeth's father also has a different surname to her (Brand)

If there is any objection to this course of action, or if anyone has further information about any profiles linked with Elizabeth Brane, please leave an answer or comment below. If there are no objections by 23 January, I will start the unlinking process.

I am totally confused.  I have Richard and Elizabeth in my direct line.  Everything I've found on her says her parents are John Brane and Susan Lappage.  But Susan's parents are supposedly Thomas Lappage and Agnes Gael.  Agnes was born in 1548 and Susan in 1571.  So this must all be wrong if Elizabeth was born around 1505????  Can anyone help me out here?

Sounds like a good plan, Jo. I am happy to investigate the Gloucestershire part of the problem. I have come across Gloucestershire Machins before so might already have some information.

That’s good. Meacham becomes  Mecham as you go earlier ;  I haven’t seen Machin as a variation for the Somerset Meachams which is why Thomas seems to be the odd one out.
Good to know that what the local variants are Joe. Thanks for adding this information into the mix.

Richard Chatfield and Elizabeth Brane are my direct  ancestors. From the research I have done I have always seen Richard Chatfield's wife as Brane.    This sounds okay to me to go ahead and unlink.

So far the only thing I can find to confirm anything to do with Henry Machin is an Extracted Probate Record: "1567 Machin, Henry, Blessed Trinitie, Gloucester 15 Stonarde See also Makyn."  I have also found a potential duplicate for Henry which is Machin-174. He has same date of death. I will keep digging.

The Visitation of Gloucester 1623 has his will dated 15 Mar 1566, prob 9 May 1567 P.C.C It names son Thomas and his wife Christian, son Henry, daughters Mary & Margaret, daughter Elizabeth and her husband Peter Romney, kinsman John Lawnson, sister Katherine, brother in law Mr Purey amd wife Elizabeth.

So he did marry an Elizabeth, just not the one he is connected to! The visitation suggest that his wife was a Baugh.

It also summarises the wills of his son Thomas and d-i-l Christian.

Thanks Elizabeth - is the spelling of Baugh likely to be correct for the LNAB when creating a new wife for Henry Machin?
Baugh is a Gloucestershire name, so it's certainly possible. I am wondering if the confusion with Brane has come from a note in the Visitation after the name Baugh which is in brackets and says something like ( Braye Harl MSS 1420). That number is not quite right I don't have the Visitation in front of me ar the moment, but clearly there is some reference to one of the Harley Manuscripts.

This looks like problems caused by the merge conflating two Elizabeths.

The son Thomas Meacham should be detached - there are Meachams in the Crewkerne area of Somerset. It is difficult to know who this profile was intended to be as date of birth and marriage info was added later by somebody else without a source. I have a Meacham who married an ancestor  in that area around 1700 so will have a look at that side of things.

Joe - Thanks for looking for this mystery Thomas Meacham.

As no-one has objected to the edits which I proposed on 20 January, I will start to unlink these profiles.

I have had a look at Thomas Meacham who is still attached to Henry Machin as a son. The correct son for Henry is Thomas Machen who married Christian, as per Henry Machin's will which names them both. I don't know who Thomas Meacham really belongs to but it's not Gloucestershire Henry. This seems a logical next step for a disconnection if there are no objections.

I have proposed the merge of Henry Machin-7 (who was has been disconnected from Elizabeth Brane-1) with Henry Machin-174 who is connected as a father to the correct son Thomas Machen. This will then bring the correct Thomas into the family.
Thank you Jo.
