Miyoshi (梅木) Umeki is Notable.

Miyoshi Umeki was a Japanese-American actress and singer and was the first Asian actor to win an Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress in 1957 for her role in the film Sayonara.

Miyoshi Umeki was born in in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan, the daughter of Japanese parents. Her father was a wealthy industrialist who owned an iron foundry. She was the youngest of nine children, each two years apart in age.

Miyoshi began her career as a night club singer in Japan using the name "Nancy Umeki" and recorded for RCA Victor Japan from 1950-1954. She emigrated to the USA circa 1955, at which time she began recording for Mercury Records. She played a leading role in the Rogers & Hammerstein Broadway musical Flower Drum Song in 1958[1] and the 1961 movie of the show.[2]

Miyoshi was married twice. Her first marriage was to Frederick Winfield "Wynn" Opie, a television director, in 1958. They had one child, Michael H. They divorced in 1967.

She was married to Randall Hood in 1968. He adopted her son, and his name was changed to Michael Randall Hood. Randall died in 1978.

According to her son, in her latter years she lived in Sherman Oaks, California for a number of years before moving to Licking, Missouri to be closer to her family. She died of cancer complications at age 78 and was buried in Boone Creek Cemetery in Licking, Texas county, Missouri where she shares a gravestone with her husband Randall Hood.[3]
