Gotō Kenji was born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture on 22 September 1967. His father, whose name remains unknown, worked at Hitachi; his mother was still living at the time of his death. He graduated from Hosei University in 1991, at which point he started his career as a journalist. He was married; he had adopted his wife's family name, Jōgo, before his death. He had three daughters.
