Biography

Israel (עפשטיין) Epstein has Jewish Roots.

Israel ben Simon[1] Epstein was born 13 Aug 1869.[2]

At the age of 36, he crossed the Atlantic on S. S. Haverford which left Liverpool March 22, 1905 and arrived at Philadelphia 13 days later, Apr. 4 1905. (The name of his wife and children couldn’t be found on this manifest). He stated he’d meet brother-in-law Jacob Rozran, of 129 Henri St, NY; Jacob had been in the US for 12 years. Israel also stated that he was a baker. [3]

On 7 January 1920, Israel was living at 2167 Lincoln Avenue in Chicago working as a newspaper dealer. He rented his portion of the house with two other families. HIs household included wife Anne and five children- Sam (age 20), Minnie (age 18), Jacob (age 17), Nathan (age 16), and Bernice (age 14). Minnie was a stenographer for a tire company.[4]

Israel was naturalized on 20 February 1920 in Chicago.[2]

On 4 April 1930, Israel and Anna and their children Nathan (age 24) and Bernice (age 18) lived at 1238 Harding Avenue in Chicago. They owned their home, valued at $10,000, and also had a radio. Israel was the proprietor of a paper stand. Also in the home was daughter Fannie, who was married to Sam Pastron, and their 2 children Seymour and Rita. Additionally, there was one roomer, Harry Silverman.[5]

On 10 April 1940, Israel lived with his son Nathaniel Van Dorf, Nathaniel's wife Rose, and their children Millicent and Sanford at 1238 Harding Avenue. Nathaniel was listed as the owner of the house, valued at $2,000, and was a doctor with his own office. Israel was no longer working.[6]

On 8 April 1950, Israel lived at 1901 Sawyer Avenue in Chicago. He and five other men lodged at the house.[7]

Israel Epstein died in Chicago on 9 April 1952 at the age of 82. He was living at 4616 S. Drexel Boulevard at the time of his death. His occupation was listed as Tailor. Ernest Mair was the informant on the death certificate.[8] He was buried in Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois.[1]

Research Notes

  • initially our WT challenge team thought these 2 immigration records belonged to “our” Israel, but it turns out they belong to a different one. Therefore, he may not have been born in Babruysk. This “wrong” Israel had a brother Schleime, and were they were planning to meet a cousin, Abram Zaitkin(?) in New York City.[9][10]
