Haiganoush Khatchadourian was born in the Amasia Sanjak in the Sivas Vilayet or Samsoun Sanjak in the Trabzon Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire on 10 Jul 1902. She passed away in 1986.
"Haiganoush Ayvazian was the wife of Manoog; the mother of Suren, Arthur, George & Dorothy; the grandmother of Susan, Laura, Linda & Steven; the great grandmother of Christy, Dennis, Tracy, Melissa, Nickolas, Kimberly, Deiedra, and Keri - and she was loved. She was born in a modest house on a hillside overlooking a small mountainous farming village somewhere between Samsun & Marzavon in a country that was once called Armenia. Her mother's name was Arousiag & her father's Gabriel & her holder brother was called Mesak. In her memories of that early time, she remembered being in her bed & in the stillness of the night hearing the stream that ran down the hillside. She would awaken in the morning to hear the clanging noise of the camels as they were led to the marketplace. After her father's death, her mother moved them to Marzavon, near her family. Her mother worked at Anatolia College to help support her family & Mesak worked to help too. It was planned that some day little Haiganoush would go to Anatolia College - but that day never came. Instead the upheaval of the war came & Mesak was taken off by the Turks never to be seen or heard from again. One early morning, she & her mother were driven out of their home & put into an endless march to nowhere. It was then at the age of 12 that she was forcibly separated from her beloved mother. She was alone - but she was loved. For it was God's love that protected that shy, sensitive, chubby little girl from most of the unspeakable horrors that befell so many others in the sad & difficult years that followed. Sometime after the war ended, through some miracle, she was able to make contact with cousins living in the San Joaquin Valley of California, and it was they who sponsored her entry into the country. At last, she was on her way to a new life - to the promised land - America. Not long after coming to California she met & married a prosperous farmer. The prosperity was not to last. They fell upon hard times and after losing everything, they moved with their small son to Los Angeles. Times were very hard but there were good times too and in the years to come, things got better. She was a very modest woman, her needs were not many. She was content to be at home with her family, her garden, & the pets she loved. Her humor and unspoken love will stay with us forever & we should never forget her that we would always stick together & give help to each other whenever needed. Our Lord has now relieved her of her pain & suffering and has taken her to be with Him & all the others she loved that passed before her, and she is at peace. She is not alone - and she is loved."[1]
