Producer of Gian-Carlo Menotti's opera, The Consul, which won a Pulitzer Prize and a New York Drama Critics' Award. As an actor, he won popular acclaim for his starring roles in the television series 77 Sunset Strip and the police series, The F.B.I.
Efrem Jr. was born on November 30, 1918, in New York City, New York. He is the son of Efrem Zimbalist and Alma Gluck. [1]

He graduated from Yale in 1940[2] and began his career on the stage, as well as producing behind the scenes, before deciding to enlist in military service for World War II on April 2, 1941 in New York City.[3]
He died at the age of 95 on May 2, 2014, of natural causes at his home in Solvang, Santa Barbara, California. [4] He is buried at Town Hill Cemetery in Connecticut[5].
His 2nd marriage was to Loranda Stephanie Spalding and they were the parents of 1 daughter. [7] Loranda died from lung cancer in 2007. His daughter, actress Stephanie Zimbalist was born of the marriage.

He played the co-lead Stuart "Stu" Bailey in 77 Sunset Strip, a popular detective series [8] In addition to 77 Sunset Strip, he was most widely known for his starring role as Inspector Lewis Erskine in the Quinn Martin television production The F.B.I. [9] The show aired from 1965 to 1974. The series was based on actual FBI cases, with fictitious main characters carrying the stories. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. played Inspector Lewis Erskine, a widower whose wife had been killed in an ambush meant for him. The Society of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation honored the character of Lewis Erskine in 1985 with a set of retired credentials. On June 8, 2009, FBI Director Robert Mueller presented Zimbalist with a plaque honoring him for his work on the series.
