Biography

Black Sea Germans
Ludwig Zeller was a Black Sea German.

Ludwig was born in Kloestitz, Bessarabia, Russia (46.331637, 28.945863) and came to America with his parents (Jacob Zeller and Maria Kuest) in 1874 and settled in Yankton, South Dakota. In the spring of 1875 his father, Jacob, homesteaded near Menno, South Dakota and continued farming until he moved into Menno in 1894. On June 11, 1899, Ludwig brought his family to Glen Ullin, North Dakota and then settled on a farm north of Heil. They lived in a frame house with his uncle, Christ Kuest, until their stone house was completed. In 1901, the Zeller family moved to New Leipzig, North Dakota where Mr. Zeller built a store and operated a general merchandise business for a few years. He was also postmaster and the Post Office was located in the store. In 1904, he sold the store to John Wolf, and the family again returned to the farm. Ludwig purchased one of the first gas engines propelled by its own power on this side of the Missouri River. In 1924 they retired and moved into the town of Heil.
