Biography

Birth

Veronika Frene Zeller was born on December 26th, 1784 in Stammheim, Zürich, Switzerland. She was the daughter of Jean Zeller and his wife Anna Marie.[1]

Immigration

On July 7, 1788, Frena arrived at the port of Philadelphia from London on board the barque La Brie with her parents Jean and Anne-Marie and siblings Jean, Anne-Marie, Anne, and Barbe.[1]

Marriage

Veronika Frene Zeller, 21, was lawfully wed to Sebastian Philips on April 13, 1806 in Maidencreek Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Veronika and Sebastian had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth, born February 22nd, 1807
  2. Samuel, born June 29th, 1808
  3. Mary, born April 24th, 1810
  4. unknown son, born about 1811 to 1820
  5. unknown daughter, born about 1811-1830
  6. Sarah, born about 1814
  7. Isaac, born February 25th, 1824
  8. James, born October 25th, 1827

In the 1820 US Census she was listed a woman 26-45 in the household of her husband, Sebastian Philips. Living with the couple was an unknown young man 18-26; their son Samuel and daughters Elizabeth and Mary, 10-16; and an unknown boy and two girls, one her daughter Sarah, all under 10.[2]

In the 1830 US Census she was listed as a woman in her 40's in the household of her husband. Living with them was her son Samuel, now his his 20's,; son Issac, 5-9; and son James, under 5. In the next household lived her eldest daughter Elizabeth in the household of her son-in-law, John Kauffman.[3]

Her daughter Mary passed away suddenly on December 29, 1840, leaving six young children: Emanuel (10), Rebecca (8), Elmira (6), Cyrus (?), Levi (2), and Reuben (infant).

On May 5, 1843, her husband Sebastian Phillips passed away. As he died intestate (without a will), the right of administration of his estate fell upon Veronica. In October, she released that right to her son-in-law, John Kauffman, husband of her daughter Elizabeth.

Death

Veronica Philips, 71, passed away on December 10th, 1855 in Maidencreek Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Saint John's Gernants Cemetery in Leesport, Pennsylvania with her husband.
