Mr. Thomas Young, Mayor of Port Augusta, was born at Happy Valley, South Australia, on November 19, 1844, being a son of Mr. Thomas Young, who represented Noarlunga in 1856-9 in the first Parliament under responsible government. He was educated at the late Mr. J. L. Young's Adelaide Educational Institution. Mr. Young has been a merchant at Port Augusta since 1864. He was a Town Councillor in 1878 and 1879, and Mayor of Port Augusta from 1879 to 1881, and was re-elected to the civic chair in 1897, and again for 1898. The Mayor has been on the Commission of the Peace for fifteen years. He served about five years in the local Volunteer Company, and has been associated with various public movements for the progress of the Northern country. The development of the mineral resources of South Australia has engaged his practical attention. He is also a member of the Flinders Lodge of Freemasons, a founder of St. Augustine's Church, and has been People's Warden for fourteen years. He has on several occasions been asked to stand for Parliament, but has never contested an election.
