Biography

Henry Yoder was born 1 December, 1840, in Upper Saucon, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of Peter Yoder and Susanna Bechtel who both came from large Mennonite Families and they carried on the tradition.[1]

Henry enlisted in Company I of the 103rd OVI on 19 Aug 1862 as a private and mustered out on 12 Jun 1865. Mennonites of the era varied in their response to the Civil War; some willingly joined the conflict, while others hired substitutes, served when drafted or remained conscientous objectors. However, his service may have put him at odds with his parents who were devout Mennonites, particularly since Henry's great-grandfather Casper Yoder and his two brothers were among the 11 families who were imprisoned and had all their property confiscated and auctioned off for refusing to swear allegiance to Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War—despite their service to the Continental troops as teamsters. The subsequent appeal by Eva Landis Yoder and Esther Oberholtzer Bachman to the Pennsylvania Assembly laid the groundwork for establishing conscientious objector status in the United States.[2]

He married Sarah Godshall Krupp in December 1868[3][4] and they had six children:

  • Almira Yoder (1869–1933)
  • Osvin Yoder (1872–1900)
  • Milton A Yoder (1874–1954)
  • Elmer E Yoder (1877–1952)
  • Susie Yoder (1882–1963)
  • Inez Yoder (1886–1962)

Between 1880[5]and 1890[6] they relocated from Ohio to Michigan.

He died on 4 May 1900 in Wakeshma, Kalamazoo, Michigan[7] and was buried in the South Fulton Cemetery in Fulton, Michigan.[8]
