In 1851, aged about 12, John attended a religious school at Seaforth, near Liverpool, Lancashire, England: Proprietors named Davenport[1]
John was later educated at the Atholl Academy, a private school in the Isle of Man, run by a Scot who believed in flogging. He excelled academically.
He entered Trinity College in Dublin in 1857: studied law. Attained a BA in 1862.[2] He was called to the bar in 1866, but changed his career to an artist shortly after his marriage.[3]
