Biography

Notables Project
Lovie Yancey is Notable.

Founder and owner of Fatburger. Lovie opened a small hamburger stand in 1947, it was called Mr. Fatburger. "The name of the store was my idea. I wanted to get across the idea of a big burger with everything on it ... a meal in itself." In 1952, she dropped the "Mr" from the name along with her business partner.

The original location was a fixture of the area, with celebrities such as Redd Foxx and Ray Charles custom ordering their burgers. Her daughter Gwen said "Oh man! I personally made burgers for Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, like Tyson, Don King, Elizabeth Taylor, Jay Leno, Arsenio Hall. Oh, I can’t remember them all. They all came."

Daughter of Clayborn & Minnie Yancey. She married Rawlins Colquitt Greene in 1930. They had a daughter, Gwendolyn.
