Sydney Stephens Wrightson was born at Cobargo in 1880.[1] He was the son of school teacher George Osborn Wrightson and Martha Stephens.
He married Nellie May Joseph at Bodalla, NSW, in 1906.[2] They were married in a double marriage with W. Hattly and Adeline Joseph.[3]
He was killed instantly when he was struck by a falling bough in a tree felling accident in the bush around Wandandian on the 2nd of April, 1936.[4][5][6] His son-in-law Ronald Williams was also injured. He was buried in the Anglican portion of the Nowra General Cemetery (unmarked grave).[7]
ACCIDENTALLY KILLED. FATALITY IN THE BUSH, AND ANOTHER MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED.[5]
Yesterday (Thursday) morning about 10 o'clock Mr. Sydney Wrightson, aged about 55, old resident of Tomerong, accidentally met his death in the bush at Wandandian, where he together with two sons and son-in-law (Ronald Williams) were felling timber. A tree which the deceased was engaged in felling hit another tree smashing a limb which rebounded and in its descent hit him (deceased) on the head inflicting a fracture of the skull, and death was instantaneous. Dr. Ryan was called and hurried to the scene, but pronounced life extinct. Mr. Williams was conveyed by the ambulance to a private hospital in Nowra, where he is being treated for shock and injuries. Deep sympathy from the community goes out to the Wrightson family in their darkest hour of trouble.
The Late Mr. S. Wrightson[8]
Bega "District News" thus refers to the sad death of Mr. S. Wrightson recently at Wandandian:—
Many old Wolumla and district friends will mourn the sad passing of Sid Wrightson, who was well known by the nickname of "Sugar." He was a good cricketer, and with his brother Frank played for the Wolumla team years ago. For a long time he had resided at Tomerong near Nowra. He was a son of the late Mr. Wrightson, who years ago was school teacher at Wolumla. The Wrightson family has been unlucky. One son was washed off the rocks at Mon-tague Island, while fishing, many years ago, and the body was never found. Some time later his mother met a tragic death. Sergeant Wrightson a few years ago stationed at Candelo, is a brother, and another brother, Frank, lives up Moss Vale way. An elder brother, Percy, well known as a foot-runner in the early days, died a few years ago. Sid was 55 years of age.
