John was born in 1853[1] in Church Fenton (or Kirk Fenton), Yorkshire, England. He was the son of John Wrightson and Sarah Cullingworth.
In 1885 John married Matilda Gibson[2] in Eastrington, Yorkshire,[3] where the family lived in 1891[4] and 1901. John was a farm labourer.[5]
