Biography

Robert Worden was born at Trewethen,[1] in the parish of St Kew,[2] in Cornwall, and was baptized in the adjacent parish of St Teath[3] on 8 April 1828. The names of his parents were William and Prudence; his father was a farmer.[4]

Robert was the fifth of eleven children of William Worden and Prudence Bligh, and the fourth of the seven who survived beyond the age of two years. All seven were living in St Kew with their parents at the time of the 1841 census.

Trewane, St Kew, 6 June 1841:[5]
William Worden (50, Farmer, Cornwall)
Prudence Worden (40, Cornwall)
Peggy Worden (15, Cornwall)
John Worden (15, Cornwall)
William Worden (15, Cornwall)
Robert Worden (13, Cornwall)
Rebecca Worden (10, Cornwall)
Elizabeth Worden (6, Cornwall)
Emily Worden (6 months, Cornwall)
Betsy Lang (25, Independent, Cornwall)
William Rowe (15, Agricultural apprentice, Cornwall)
Samuel Prior (9, Male Servant, Cornwall)
Margeret Bishop (15, Female Servant, Cornwall)
Joseph Cowling (35, Agricultural labourer, Cornwall)

The Wordens evidently moved from Trewethen to Trewane some time after the baptism of Elizabeth Worden on 30 December 1835[6] and before the baptism of Prudence Emily Bligh Worden on 28 December 1840.[7]

Trewane is about one kilometre south-west of Trewethen.[8]

The manor house at Trewane, which possibly dates from the early 17th century, is now a heritage listed building.[9] The Wordens lived there until about August 1843, at which time William Worden was unable to pay all his debts. See William Worden's profile for more details.

Robert Worden married Mary Grylls in Stoke Damerel[10] on 14 October 1848. Robert was a 21 year old bachelor, a carpenter, who was living in Egloshayle;[11] Mary was a 28 year old spinster whose address was 7 Charlotte Row[12] in Stoke Damerel. At this time Robert's father William was a corn dealer; Mary's father was Thomas Grylls, a cordwainer.[13]

The birth of a Mary Worden was registered in the Westminster district[14] in the last quarter of 1850;[15] the General Register Office birth index says that her mother's maiden surname was Grylls.[16] She was baptized at Knightsbridge All Saints[17][18] on 27 October 1850. The baptism register entry says that her parents were named Robert and Mary, her father was a carpenter, and the family lived at 9 Montpelier Place.[19] Furthermore, it also gives the date of her birth: 16 September 1850.[20]

On census day 1851 Robert Worden was away from home, but his wife Mary and daughter Mary were still at 9 Montpelier Place. Robert's eldest sister, Peggy Worden, was with them. (Peggy Worden, daughter of William and Prudence, was baptized in St Teath on 22 July 1821.)[21]

9 Montpelier Place, Westminster, 30 March 1851:[22][23]
Mary Worden (Wife, 30, Cornwall Bodmin)
Peggy Worden (Sister-in-law, 28, Cornwall St Kew)
Mary Worden (Daughter, 6 months, Middlesex St Margaret Westminster)

The writing in the census record is faint and hard to read, and although the surname was (probably) correctly entered as "Worden", the transcription given by FamilySearch has it as "Werden", while ancestry.com has "Union".

The birth of an Elizabeth Worden was registered in the Ware district[24] in the second quarter of 1852.[25] She was baptized at Tottenham All Hallows[26][27] on 6 June 1852; the baptism register entry says that her parents were named Robert and Mary and her father was a carpenter, and also gives the date of her birth as 11 March 1852. The family's abode was recorded simply as Tottenham.[28]

From 1853 to 1857 Robert and Mary Worden were once more living in Cornwall. The births of three children were registered in the St Columb district:[29] William Worden in the last quarter of 1853,[30] Amanda Sarah Worden in the last quarter of 1855,[31] Emily Authur Worden in the third quarter of 1857.[32] In each case the General Register Office birth index says that the mother's maiden surname was Grylls.[16]

William, Amanda Sarah and Emily Authur were all baptized in St Breock.[33] Unfortunately, there are no online images of the relevant St Breock baptism register, but transcriptions are available, courtesy of the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks. William was baptized on 22 January 1854,[34] Amanda Sarah on 18 November 1855,[35] Emily Arthur on 30 August 1857.[36] All three of these records say that the parents were named Robert and Mary, that Robert was a carpenter, and that the family lived in Wadebridge.[37]

In 1857 Robert Worden, builder and contractor of Wadebridge, was bankrupt. A notice published in The London Gazette  on 26 May 1857 said that he was
"required to surrender himself to Montague Baker Bere, Esq., Her Majesty's Commissioner of the Exeter District Court of Bankruptcy, on the 2nd day of June next, and on the 2nd day of July following, at one in the afternoon precisely, each of the said days, at the Exeter District Court of Bankruptcy, in Queen-street, in the city of Exeter, and make a full discovery and disclosure of his estate and effects; when and where the creditors are to come prepared to prove their debts, and at the first sitting to choose assignees, and at the last sitting the said bankrupt is required to finish his examination".[38]

To avoid this impending unpleasantness, Robert fled the country. The following report appeared in The Royal Cornwall Gazette  on 5 June 1857.

Exeter Bankruptcy Court

An item in the Melbourne newspaper The Age  on 20 July 1857 reported the previous day's arrival at Hobson's Bay[39] of the ship Royal Charter,[40] which had departed Liverpool on 16 May with 464 passengers. The report gives the names of the 35 cabin passengers and also the 115 second cabin passengers, one of whom was Mr Robt Worden.[41]

A digitized copy of the passenger list of theRoyal Charter  is available online courtesy of the Public Record Office Victoria. It includes (in the 2nd cabin) a 30 year old English carpenter named Robert Worden, who embarked at Liverpool and landed at Melbourne.[42] (The passenger list can also be viewed on ancestry.com.)[43]

So probably Robert left Wadebridge on Tuesday 12 May, and may have taken a steamer from Padstow to Bristol as the first leg of his jouney.

Exeter Bankruptcy Court
Bristol Mercury,  9 May 1857, p.3

Mary and the children were left behind in Wadebridge, as an 1861 census record shows.

Wadebridge, St Breock, 7 April 1861:[44]
Mary Worden (Head, 39, Cornwall Bodmin)
Mary Worden (Daughter, 10, Scholar, Middlesex London)
Elizabeth Worden (Daughter, 9, Scholar, Hertford Hoddn)
William Worden (Son, 7, Scholar, Cornwall Wadebridge)
Amanda Worden (Daughter, 5, Scholar, Cornwall Wadebridge)
Emily Worden (Daughter, 3, Cornwall Wadebridge)

Here "Hoddn" is an abbreviation for Hoddesdon, which is a parish in the Ware registration district.[24]

Later in 1861 Mary and the children left Cornwall to join Robert in Australia.

The 1851 and 1861 records are consistent in stating that Mary was born in Bodmin.[45] Evidently she was the Mary Grylls, daughter of cordwainer Thomas Grylls and his wife Mary, who was baptized in Bodmin on 30 April 1820.[46]

On 16 January 1862 the Melbourne newspaper The Herald  reported the arrival at Hobson's Bay of the ship Agincourt,  from London via Plymouth.[47] The Agincourt passenger list is also available online courtesy of the Public Record Office Victoria, and it includes Mary Worden and her five children, who embarked at Plymouth and landed at Melbourne.[48]

Agincourt,  intermediate steerage passengers, Plymouth, 14 October 1861:
Mary Worden (34, wife)
Mary Worden (10)
Elizth Worden (9)
Wm Worden (7)
Amanda Worden (5)
Emily Worden (3)

A search at Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria[49] reveals that the birth of Anzonette Prudence Maud Worden, daughter of Robert Worden and Mary Grylls, was registered in the Collingwood[50] district in 1863.

There are Victorian marriage records for five of the six children of Robert and Mary Worden.[49]

  • Mary married William Douglas Mitchell 1872;
  • Elizabeth married Arthur Edward Fisher in 1873;
  • William married Harriett Beecher Stowe in 1877;
  • Amanda Sarah married Alfred Green in 1873;
  • Anzonette Prudence Maud married John Shannon in 1884.

The death of 21 year old Emily Arthur Worden of Collingwood, daughter of Robert Worden and Mary Grylls, was registered in 1879.[49] Her funeral took place on 20 May.

THE Friends of Mr. ROBERT WORDEN are respectfully invited follow the remains of his beloved fourth eldest daughter, Emily Arthur Worden, to their last resting place, in the Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will move from his residence, Cromwell-street, off Vere-street, Collingwood, THIS DAY (Tuesday), the 20th inst., at a quarter to three o'clock precisely.
WILLIAM GEORGE RAVEN, Undertaker, Nos. 203 and 205 Smith-street, Fitzroy.[51]

Newspaper marriage notices say that the marriage of Elizabeth Worden to A. E. Fisher took place on 17 April 1873, and the marriage of Annie Worden to John Shannon took place on 15 April 1884:

Fisher—Worden.—On the 17th inst., at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. James Rowe, A. E. Fisher, of Melbourne, to Elizabeth, second daughter of Robert Worden, late of Cornwall.[52]
Shannon—Worden.—On the 15th April, by the Rev. N. Kinsman, John Shannon, to Annie, youngest daughter of Robt. Worden of Collingwood.[53]

Amanda Sarah Green, aged twenty-two, died at her residence on McKean Street, North Fitzroy, on 30 October 1877.

Green.—On the 30th October, at her residence, McKean Street, North Fitzroy, after a long and painful illness, Amanda Sarah Green, aged twenty-two. Asleep in Jesus.[54]

The following advertisement appeared in the Collingwood and Fitzroy paper The Mercury and Weekly Courier  on 28 May 1885:[55]

Practical Builder

It seems likely that when Robert arrived in Melbourne he first found employment as a carpenter, and from there progressed to being a builder (as he had done in Cornwall). It is unclear when he became an architect.

Robert evidently decided that advertising in The Mercury and Weekly Courier  was a good idea, because from 11 September 1885 onwards his advertisement appeared every week. There was a change in June 1886: on 4 June the advertisement was as shown above,[56] but on 11 June the address had changed from Cromwell Street, Collingwood, to Coffee Palace, Smith-st, Fitzroy.[57]

From time to time Robert placed advertisements in The Age inviting tenders for various building jobs. The earliest found so far appeared on 11 March 1879:[58]

TENDERS required for taking down and REBUILDING end of HOUSE. Apply Robert Worden, Cromwell-street, near Vere-street, Collingwood.

The next after this seems to be one that appeared on 13 May 1884:[59]

Tenders wanted by Robert Worden, Architect, Cromwell-Street, Collingwood, for Carpenters' Work (labor only) of Free Christian Tabernacle, Johnston-street, Fitzroy.

So certainly Robert called himself an architect in May 1884, but perhaps he did not in March 1879.

Here are some more examples of advertisements by architect Robert Worden, calling for tenders.
