From Ancestry.com: Nelson County Virginia Heritage 1807-2000- S. Grose: "John Edward Woody (November 15 1879-July 1947) was the son of Henry Woody. At age 24, J.E. Woody married Fannie Lee Floyd, age 19, of Nelson Co. Fannie was daughter of Solom Floyd a prosperous farmer and Edmonia B. Cluff of Nelson County, born Nov. 17, 1856, died March 19, 1922, buried Hebron Baptist Church in Afton. His tombstone reads "No pain, no grief, or fear can reach our loved on here." His second wife was Emma Perry. Besides Fannie, Solom and Edmonia's children included Alexander (Alex), Charles Edward, Rosa Elizabeth, Nanny, and Molly. Children of Solon and Emma were Stephen and Berry Floyd. . . . John Edward Woody was a tobacco and corn farmer. Family lore suggests that excess corn was used for "likker" until he was elected constable of Nelson County, who rode his district on a horse, also delivering groceries to mountain people who were unable to reach the local stores. Necessities like flour, sugar, salt and coffee was thus provided for his neighbors who sometimes returned the favor by providing local chickens, beef, honey, eggs, or fresh vegetables." . . . "On the day of his death, John Edward had just cashed a government check at Smiths's Store in Nelson County. Late that evening a lightning storm ignited his home rented from Judge Whitehous on Page's Lane. The community rallied to save the house and John escaped with collies Amos and Andy, but he went back into the burning house to salvage his money and died there. The only remains were said to be half of his heart, which was buried in a full casket in a funeral attended by the whole community. The six pall bearers recalled that on the way to the Rockfish Presbyterian Church cemetery (at Nellysford) that the casket suddenly became the weight of a 180 pound man. . . .
