Biography

Washington Wood was born April 17, 1817, in Wabash County Illinois. During the 1850 census researchers believe he was living with his mother Matilda 59, and either children from an earlier marriage or younger siblings, Frances,18, Harriet, 15 and Ira 7 in Wabash County.

In 1860 he was living with Nancy 29, Alas A 9, Eliza D 4, and Matilda (Tillie) Frances 1, as well as Ira S 16, still in Wabash County. A daughter stated on her marriage license that her mother’s maiden name was Nancy Compton.

By the 1870 census the family had moved to Lukin Twp, Lawrence County Illinois and Nancy had apparently died. Two daughters shown on the 1860 census, Eliza and Matilda were living with him as well as Arabell, a daughter born to Washington and Nancy in 1864.

On January 5, 1871, he married Mary C Searight (although a daughter stated on her marriage license that her mother’s name was Mary Wright. They had Mary born in 1873 and Anna born in 1877. Washington died the following winter.

On January 30, 1878, George Washington Wood died at his home in Petty Twp Lawrence County Illinois at age 60 years 9 months 13 days. The cause of death was Apoplexy and at the time of his death he was married and farming. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery Petty Twp Lawrence County Illinois.

Washington had not Will but his estate was probated in Lawrence County Illinois by his administrators Mary Wood and W J Mayo.
