Biography

Birth and childhood

James Marchant Wood was born in eastern Indiana (Union or Wayne county) on 28 March 1889 to Oras F. Wood (abt.1858-1897) and Carrie Gertrude Stephens.[1][2] While his delayed birth certificate (from 1963) says that he was born in Liberty, Union county, other records state that he born in Richmond, Wayne county (adjacent to Union county)[3] or Centreville, Wayne county[4] or Abington, Wayne county.[5]

His father died in 1897[6][7][8] when James was 8 years old. A record of James and/or his mother from the census of 1900 has yet to be identified. A record from the census of 1910 [9] shows "Carrie Wood", a widow of age 50, living in Abington, Wayne county, in the household of her brother John Stevens. Carrie was accompanied there by a single child, "James Wood", age 21, who was a "nephew" of John Stevens (i.e. Carrie's son).

Education

James went to high school in Richmond[10] then, from 1909 to 1911, attended and graduated from Purdue University[11], where he was known as "Big Jim" (due to his height) and he studied civil engineering. [12][13]

Marriage

On 14 February 1917 James married Mabel Neilson (Tomb) Wood (1888-1961) in London, Ontario, Canada.[14] According to a Purdue alumni directdry of 1924[15], James had lived and worked in London from 1911 to 1915 as Engineer and Superintendant of the Ideal Concrete Machinery Company before moving first to work in Ohio then in Atlanta, Georgia. The marriage license records that James was living in Atlanta at the time of the marriage. Mabel had grown up in Pennsylvania, but a wedding announcement appearing in a Pittsburgh newspaper stated that she was the daughter of “Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Tomb of London Ontario, formerly of Wilkinsburg …”[16] The January 1915 Ontario marriage license of Mabel’s sister Nan[17] states that Nan and her parents lived in London and she had lived there since June 1914.

A notice of the marriage also appeared on 23 Feb 1917 in the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette stating that after a honeymoon in New York the couple would live in Atlanta, GA.[18] "L.A. Wood of Fort Wayne, Indiana was best man." While it might appear that this was a relative of James, he had no known relative by that name. Rather, James' best man appears to have been Purdue 1911 civil engineering classmate Lynton Alexander Wood whose photo and profile appear next to James' in the 1911 Purdue University Debris.[19][20]

Children

James and Mabel had 3 children:

  1. Nancy Arabella Wood, b. 25 Sep 1918 in New Orleans, Louisiana[21][22][23][24][25][26], m. John Alden Pond in Memphis, TN on 10 June 1943[27][28][29], d. in Bethesda, MD on 21 Oct 2005[30][31]
  2. James Marchant Wood, jr., b. in Memphis, Tennessee 21 Dec 1920[32][33]
  3. Mary Elizabeth Wood, b. in Memphis, Tennessee on 6 Dec 1924[34][35][36][37]

Residence and occupation

• In April 1910 (while studying civil engineering at Purdue University), the above cited census record shows James to be residing with his mother in the household of his uncle in Wayne county, Indiana.

• According to a Purdue alumni directory of 1924[38], by 1924 James and family lived at 1662 Autumn Ave, Memphis, TN. James's career to date was summarized as follows: i) 1911 to 1915 - Engineer and Superintendant of the Ideal Concrete Machinery Company of London, Ontario; ii) 1915 to 1916 - Sales Engineer of General Fireproof Co. of Youngstown, OH; iii) 1916 - 1919 - Sales Engineer, So. G.F. Co., Atlanta, GA; iv) 1919 - 1922 - Treasurer and Manager, Fischer Cement and Roof Co., Little Rock, Ark; v) 1922 - Secretary and City Sales Manager, Fischer Lime and Cement Co., Memphis, TN.

• A 1915 publication listing alumni of Purdue University recorded that James lived in Youngstown, OH and worked as Sales Engineer for the General Fireproofing Co. [39]

• In February 1917 his marriage license (cited above) shows him to be living in Atlanta while getting married in London, Ontario, Canada.

• In March 1917 his draft registration card[40] shows him to be living in New Orleans but working for an Atlanta employer. Daughter Nancy was born in New Orleans in 1918[41]

• A census record from January 1920[42] shows James, Mabel and daughter Nancy to be living in Little Rock, Arkansas and working as the manager of a cement company. Daughter Nancy had been born in Louisiana.

• A census record from 1930[43] shows James and Mabel living in Memphis at 1662 Autumn Avenue in Memphis, Shelby County, TN with their full family of 3 children. It is here that James and Mabel lived for the rest of their lives.[44][45] Note that James’ mother Carrie G. Wood and Mabel’s mother Arabella Tomb also lived with them in 1930. Also note that a single, black woman, “Sarah McNeil” also lived with them as a salaried servant. The 1950 census record[46] stated that James Wood was is vice-president of a company manufacturing culvert machinery.

Nearly drowned in the Mississippi

James and Mabel were among the 32 people rescued by boatman Tom Lee when their ship capsized on 8 May 1925 in the Mississippi river 20 miles south of Memphis. The ship, a sternwheeler named the Norman, had been hired for an excursion by the members and families of the Mid-South Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. "The ship was designed as a towboat, with accommodations for a small crew. But on the morning of May 8th, with her new oil tanks filled to capacity, the Norman took on the additional weight of 72 passengers." With four or five trips from the sinking/sunken Norman to shore and back, Lee was able pull onto his small skiff, named the Zev, almost half of those floundering in the water. Others managed to swim ashore. Twenty three of the passengers were never found, however. [47] James was quoted by one reporter, "We all owe our lives to Tom Lee. That’s all there is to it.” A lengthier quote from James Wood was included in an account appearing in the Saint Louis Post Dispatch:[48] "My wife [and several friends including ] Major Montgomery Gardner of the War Department were on the lower deck when the boat started turning over. We all held hands and walked to the high side of the deck and as the Norman gradually settled on its side we clambered over, still holding each others' hands. The boat suddenly shifted and came to rest with its keel straight up in the air. It turned back slightly and then started down, sinking from underneath us.... That was the last anyone saw of Major Garnder alive. I had gotten hold of a piece of brush and was holding my wife out of the water. Neither of us could swim and we just managed to keep our heads up.... 'There's a boat!', my wife exclaimed suddenly. I whistled as loudly as I could and my strength was fast ebbing way. Tom Lee started his motor boat directly toward us. He knew the current. When he got within a few feet of the four of us he swerved the boat and ran alongside. Holding the wheel with one hand he reached over and drew my wife out of the water .... Then he ... started for me.... If it had not been for Tom Lee, I would not be here today to tell this story. I owe my life and I owe my wife's life to the labor of Tom Lee. And there are many others who will tell you the same thing."

"Jim Wood" is among the names inscribed on a monument to Tom Lee (an obelisk on a pedestal) erected in 1954.[49]

Deaths of Mabel and of James

Mabel died at home (1662 Autumn) in Memphis on 30 Oct 1961. [50] The cause of death was recorded as “Acute coronary artery occlusion”. Her remains were buried at Memphis’ Forest Hill cemetery. [51] Big Jim died in Memphis in August 1981. [52][53][54] Where was he buried? Burial not listed for either Forest Hill cemetery in Memphis (where Mabel was buried) nor Elkhorn cemetery in Richmond, Indiana (where both of this parents were buried).
