Biography

Found in The State 02 October 1900: While visiting friends in Charlotte Mrs. J. A. Gruber died yesterday morning. The body was brought to Columbia on the night train, arriving here early this morning and taken to the late home of the deceased at 1721 Taylor street. The announcement as to the funeral arrangements will be made later. She was about 65 years of age, and was the mother of Mr. A. C. Gruber, the well-known engineer of the F. C. & P. division of the Seaboard. There are three sons and two daughters surviving Mrs. Gruber. Two of these children live here, one in Sumter and one in Florida.

Found in The Statesville Record and Landmark (Statesville, N. C.) 09 October 1900: The following notice of the death of Mrs. Julia A. Gruber is from an obituary written by a friend, which appeared in Sunday's Charlotte Observer: Mrs. Julia A. Gruber, widow of the late J. A. C. Gruber, the well-known engineer, fell asleep in Jesus, in the home of Mr. S. E. Todd, in this city, October 1st, at 4:25 a.m. Mrs Gruber and family lived here some years, but lately have made their home in Columbia, S. C. In August she went to Statesville to seek the benefit of a cooler atmosphere. While there she was attacked with her last illness, and, returning home, got as far as Charlotte. Here, among friends who loved her, she passed away to her eternal reward. The remains were taken to Columbia for interment and there, with loved ones gone before, she sweetly sleeps, awaiting the resurrection morn. Mrs. Gruber was Miss Julia A. Wood, daughter of the late Peter and Annise Wood, of Charleston, S. C., in which city she was born February 15, 1835. Four children survive her: Miss Julia E. and A. C. Gruber, of Columbia, S. C.; M. E. Gruber, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. W. M. Folsom, of Sumter, S. C. At the early age of 13 she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and ever remained faithful to her profession, adorning the religion of the Lord Jesus Christ in a life of godliness which has now been crowned with the fullness of joy in the Father's 'well done.' Mrs. Gruber was a long resident of Statesville and is well remembered by many people here. Her husband, the late J. A. C. Gruber, was an engineer on the A. T. & O. road between Charlotte and Statesville, from the time the road was rebuilt, in the early 70s, up to probably 12 or 14 years ago. He was well known to everybody along the line and for years the train on that road was known as "Gruber's train."

The DOB above comes from the 1900 US Census for Ward 3, Columbia, S. C. She is 65 and living in the home of her son, Albian, 27, his wife, Matilda, 22, their son, Albian, M., 4 months, and Julia's daughter, Julia E., 39. She was born in S. C. as were both parents.
