Mabel Wood Cheek is the other half of the famous Cheekwood Museum and Botanical Gardens in Nashville, Tennessee. Her husband, Leslie Cheek and his family, were grocers and creators of the famous blend of coffee known as Maxwell House. She and her husband purchased the parent company for $40 million dollars. Soon after they purchased 100 acres of woodland west of Nashville. They hired a New York architect to turn the woodland into a mansion and gardens. The Cheek Estate was deeded to their daughter Huldah Cheek Sharp. In the 1950's she and her husband put part of the site up for sale as a museum and botanic garden. Through the efforts of several Nashville organizations the estate was purchased and became the now famous Cheekwood Museum and Botanic Gardens.
Mabel was born in 1874. She passed away in 1946.
