Biography

John was born in March 1829 in Alabama. He was the son of Nathan Womack and Louvicia Womack. He died while a prisoner of war in May 1862 in Indianapolis and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.[1] This is a reburial; remains of Confederate soldiers and sailors were moved here in 1933 from Greenlawn Cemetery.

John married Julia Woodruff Allen on 17 February 1853 in Itawamba, Mississippi.[2]

John served as a Private in Company H, 26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army.[3] He was captured along with two of his brothers-in-law on 16 February 1862 in connection with the battles over Ft. Donnellson, Tennessee. Transferred to a POW camp in Indiana, he suffered from the extreme cold and died of Typhoid Fever there in May 1862. [4]
