Ludwig Wilhelm was the eldest child of Maximilian, Herzog in Bayern (Duke in Bavaria) and his wife Ludovika, Prinzessin von Bayern (Princess of Bavaria), both from different branches of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Ludwig was born 21 June 1831 at München (Munich) in Bavaria.[1]
He renounced his rights as eldest son and successor to the title of reigning Duke in Bavaria, in favour of his younger surviving brother, Karl Theodor on 9 March 1859 in order to undertake what was considered an unequal or morganatic marriage.[1]
He married at Augsburg, 28 May 1859, Henriette Mendel, the daughter of Adam Mendel and Anne Sophie Müller. She was born at Darmstadt 31 July 1833 and had been created Freifrau (Baroness) von Wallersee just before the marriage on 19 May 1859.[1]
They had one daughter, born before the marriage, but presumably subsequently legitimated;
Henriette died 12 November 1891 at München.
Ludwig married just over a year later on 19 November 1892 at München, also morganatically, Barbara Antonie Barth, the daughter of Ludwig Barth, and his wife, Marie Klara Beyhl. She had been born at München 25 October 1871 (and was 40 years younger than her husband) and had been ennobled, being granted the name of von Bartolf on 16 November 1892.[1]
They were divorced at München 11 July 1913. There had been a daughter born at Lausanne on 12 March 1913 -
Ludwig died at München on 6 November 1920.[1]
