Biography

Jane was born in 1834 in Jasper, Georgia, fourth child and third daughter of Riley Wise and Prudence Vickers Wise. In the 1840 census she is a FWF under 10. In 1846 when she was 12 years old, she married Joel Leftwich in Troup County, GA. He was 23 years old. In 1848 when she was 14 she had her first child, William Riley Leftwich. The 1850 census for Troup County shows Joel age 27, Jane age 16 and William Riley, age 2. About 1856 Jane and Joel and their family joined several Leftwich families and migrated to East Texas. The 1860 census for Titus, Texas shows Joel age 28, Jane age 26, W.R. age 12, J.H. age 9, R.R. age 7, Sally age 4 and Susanna (Texanna) age 1. During the War Between the States, three of Jane's brothers and two brothers-in-law were killed, all in 1864. Her grandmother Sarah Vickers died in the 1860s, and Jane herself died after 1860 and before 1864. The grandmother of Martha Strong Slater told her the story of Jane's death. A slave girl was trying to help her deliver a child and squeezed her without results. Both Jane and the baby died. She was about 30 years old. There is no record of this. Joel was away in the Confederate Army. In 1865 Joel is remarried and the father of a new son.
