Leslie Alfred Winton was born on 26 March 1921 in Merredin, Western Australia.[1] He was the son of Newton Winton and Winifred McKenney.
Leslie enlisted in the Australian Army on 8 September 1941 in Claremont, Western Australia. He was promoted to Sergeant on 27 March 1944. On 6 April 1944 he embarked at Thursday Island and disembarked on 9 April 1944 in Merauke. On 19 June 1946 he embarked Melbourne on Water Transport Duties and disembarked Brisbane on 8 July 1946.[2]
Leslie served with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan following Japan's surrender in August 1945. The BCOF was a multinational occupation force made up of military men from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Their objective was to stabilize and demilitarize a devastated and defeated Japan.[3][4]
Leslie, during his active duty in the Australian Army, received the Mention in Despatches award. This recognition was published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on March 6, 1947, and also appeared in the London Gazette on the same date1. His service and contributions were acknowledged, and this honor reflects his dedication during the post-World War II period.
Leslie died on 25 October 1982 in South Australia when he was 61 years old.[5]
