Biography

James Winton was born in Tunbridge Wells, England, in about 1799. He was the son of William Winton and Elizabeth Burrell. He was baptised in Upper Beeding, Sussex, on 13 April 1806.[1]

James was convicted of ‘breaking and entering and stealing’ at the Kent Assizes in Maidstone on 17 March 1817. He was sentenced to death, but received a reprieve to transportation for a term of 14 years. On 28 April 1817, James was incarcerated in the prison hulk ‘Retribution’, which was moored at Woolwich.[2][3]

James was transported to the Colony of New South Wales as a convict. He embarked aboard the ship ‘Larkins’ on 24 July 1817 and arrived in Sydney on 22 November 1817. He settled at Wilberforce where he had some land and operated as a licensed publican.

James Winton married locally born Mary Ann ‘Fanny’ Lisson at St Matthew’s parish church, Windsor on 6 December 1825.[4] Fanny had one child from a previous relationship. James and Fanny had 7 children.

In July 1838, a man’s horse went missing from James Winton’s pub on the Hawkesbury River. Its owner authorised James to give a 1 pound reward if the horse had strayed and was returned.[5]

In September 1838, James was convicted of knowingly admitting a convict into his public house. He was fined 5 pounds, including court costs.[6]

Fanny passed away in 1839, aged 32.

James Winton passed away on 11 June 1841. The cause of death was excessive drinking.[7]

James was buried with Fanny in the Wilberforce Cemetery.[8]

James died intestate with an estate of 358 pounds 7 shillings and 9 pence.[9][10]

At the time of his death, James’s last name was recorded as Winten, not Winton. This altered spelling was passed down to his son James Abraham Winton Snr (1834-1884) and grandchildren.

Research notes

The NSW death record says James was 45 at the time of death. However, James's gravestone says he was 42 when he died, which correlates with his prison and transportation records.
