Kate Elizabeth Winslet, an English actress and singer, was born on 5 October 1975 in Reading, Berkshire, England to Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges. Her parents married in 1968 in Reading and remained there with their family for all of Kate's childhood. Kate has two sisters (Anna Melissa b:1972 and Beth Amelia b:1978) and one brother (Joss Oliver b:1981).
Kate studied acting as early as age 11, and landed her first television commercial at age 12. She appeared in numerous stage performances throughout her teen years. By 1991, she made her television debut and her career launched from there.
In 1994 she received her first awards for her performances, an Empire Award and a London Film Critics' Circle Award for British Actress of the Year. In 1995, she received her first nomination for the Academy Award and Golden Globe. Although she didn't win either, her nominations would lead to greater things. In 1996, she won her second Empire Award.
In 1996-1997, she starred in Titanic alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, and received the Academy Award for Best Actress.
