Biography

Rebecca was born about 1794 in Virginia, daughter of Wiliam Wilson, Jr. and Rebecca Pettus Brown. Before 1810 in Oglethorpe, Georgia when she was 15 she married James Hart Leftwich, son of John Leftwich and Sytha Hammet. Both their fathers were Revolutionary soldiers from Virginia who had migrated to Georgia after the war.

In the 1820 Census, Rebecca and James are in Lexington, Oglethorpe, Georgia with three children, two of whom died young, and one slave. In the 1830 Census James Hart and Rebecca were in Capt. Beasley's District, Oglethorpe, GA with 10 Free White Persons and 4 slaves. The children are identifiable by age range, but there is a FWM 50-59 who is unknown. In the 1840 Census they are in District 701, Troup County, GA with11 Free White Persons and 3 slaves. The older gentleman from the 1830 Census is not here. In the 1850 Census they are in District 804, Troup County, GA with James 60, Rebecca 56, Littleberry 20, and Madison 16. There is an Isaac C. Leftwich who may be a grandson.

It is not known when James Hart Leftwich died, but in about 1856 Rebecca joined several of her children and their families and migrated to East Texas. In the 1860 Census she , age 66, is living with her son James Leftwich, 50 and her two youngest sons in Beat 2, Hickory Hill, Cass County, Texas.

No records can be found for Rebecca after the 1860 census. It is not known when or where she died.
