THE PLACE OF THE ACORNS
We've already mentioned the Rev. Edward Brice who came from Scotland and began his ministrry in "Broadisland" in 1613, and he had a son James Brice of Kilroot, and by him a grandson John Brice, and thus a descendant Edward Brice of Greencastle whose daughter Blanche Brice married local farmer James Killen. Their son John Killen (1768-1828) merchant, married Martha Doole, and their third child Sarah Killen became the wife of William Wilson (1800-1879) of Summerfield, Broughshane Street, Ballymena; which fine old house with its spacious gardens and mature trees is now gone without trace. A municipal car park and public convenience occupy part of the property, and the remainder of the site is being occupied by John Wilson, an entrepreneur with the Midas touch (of Rathkenny Creamery famer).
The said William Wilson (1800-1879) was a son of George Wilson of Bellaghy, Co. Londonderry whose wife was Elizabeth Dixon, “called the beautiful Lizzie”, and she was a daughter of Francris Dixon of Ballymacombs, Bellaghy. The wife of Francis Dixon was Hannah Wilson (1740-1790) referred to as “the handsome Quakeress”, daughter of Morgan Wilson of Derganagh, Maghera, Co. Londonderry. Two sons also of Francis and Hannah Dixon of Ballymacombs were, Francis Dixon of Farm Lodge, Ballymena, who wed a Miss Gihon, cousin of “Old Billy” and Mrs Curell, and Mrs Brown of Liverpool and New York. And William Dixon of the Brewery, Ballymena. I saw this on two different hand written manuscripts and on one of them was recorded this reference to the above William Dixon.
Note by Dr. Killen --- “Married Miss Quinn of Ballymena, died worth £30,000. Left “Newtoncromlin” to his son - two sons in the army, 1 daughter, all came to ruin.”
William Wilson (1800-1879) had a brother George Wilson who went to America and also one name Francis Wilson who married Miss McMaster of Belfast and their son William was in business in the Crumlin area with R. Potts. A fourth Wilson brother was Andrew who wed a Miss Davidson of Ballymena.
Thus we see that when John Killen Wilson (1831-1910), took to wife Mary Potts (1836-1925) he wasn’t among strangers, nor his brother the Rev. James A. Wilson of Hydepark, Mallusk, who married Annie Potts either. He died on 14.2.1870 (no issue).
