Biography

Jeremiah Shepard Wilson, son of Phillip Wilson and Caroline (Prentiss) Wilson, was born 5 Dec 1856, in Central Village, Connecticut.[1]

1860 US Census. Plainfield, Windham, CT. Wilson: Philip, age 38, Operative; Caroline, age 38; Edgar, age 14; Emma ?, age 7; Jeremiah S, age 3.[2]

1870 US Census. Windham, Windham Co., CT. Wilson: Philip, age 47, works in thread mill; Caroline, age 47; Jerry S., age 13, At school.[3]

1880. Jesse S Wilson, age 23, born in Moosup, Connecticut, residing in Willimantic and Calista Shurtliffe, 21, born in Ashford, residing in West Ashford were married 11 Feb 1880 in Stafford, Connecticut.[4]

1880 US Census. Union Street, Windham, Windham Co., Boro of Willimantic, Connecticut. Wilson: Philip A., age 56 works in cotton mill; Caroline H., age 54 wife; Edgar L., age 34 son; Anna, age 34, daughter in law; Louis, age 4, grand son; Nettie, age 2, g daughter; Jerry L. [sic], age 22, son, works in cotton mill; Calista, daughter in law, works in cotton mill. All born in Connecticut parents born in Connecticut.[5]

Gladys, Jeremiah's grand-daughter told me that Jerry worked for American Thread, and became crippled. He played the Banjo and died when Gladys was young.

Towards the end of 1880, Jerry S. Wilson, was told to "belt" a shaft where he worked at the Willimantic Linen Company. Unbeknownst to Jerry the shaft had been improperly hung. It fell landing on the millworker. Jerry's ankle and foot were crushed and his leg was broken between the knee and the hip. The available medical treatment was unable to restore his leg. He remained crippled for the rest of his life. Wilson attempted to have the company pay his medical expenses, but the company was unwilling to do so. He understandably sued the company for $25,000. A trial was held, the Linen company was found guilty and was required to pay $3000.

In the meantime while this was going on poor Jerry was poor. He was living on the goodness of his neighbors and piling up debt. Later, some of his assets were sold to meet those debts.[6]

1910 US Census. Waltham, Middlesex, MA. with Annie (Wilson) & Horatio West. Wilson, Calista, Mother in law, age 46, married once for 28 years, had 5 children, 4 are living, she and father born in CT, mother born in RI; Wilson, Dubrille, brother in law, age 15, single, born in CT, father born in RI, mother born in CT, a housepainter; Wilson, Jerry, father in law, age 52, married 2 times, current marriage for 28 years, born in RI, parents born in CT, housepainter.[7]

Jerry Shepard Wilson died in Auburn, Massachusetts, 18 October 1928. He was living on Stone Street and the cause of death was senility. He was buried at Hillside Cemetery in Auburn[1]

  2. Lillian May Wilson, according to the Descendants of William Shurtleff b. 1 Dec 1884, Ashford; d. in Sept 1887. This birth is wrong. She was born 15 December 1883[9] and died 5 Nov 1886.[10]
  3. Not listed in Descendats of William Shurtleff[8] Ernest E Wilson b. 1 Dec 1885.[11] No Further record.
  4. Caroline b. 17 Dec 1886, Ashford #5259. She married Edward Harrington and had children: Harrington - Edward born 7 Feb 1901; Arthur Lionell born July 1902; and Philip Gordon born Jan 1904 d July 1904. 1920 Census, Auburn, Massachusetts[12] 1940 Census, Auburn.[13]
  5. Harriet Wilhelmina b. 31 July 1888 in Willimantic.[14] She married Horatio G West. 1910 US Census Waltham, Middlesex Co., MA-- West: Horatio G., head, age 24, married 4yrs, born in MA, parents born in CT, a weaver in a cotton Mill; Annie, wife, age 22, married for 4 yrs, she and her mother were born in CT, her father was born in RI; Mauland, son, 2; Howard D, son, 2. Also living with them were her parents, Jerry and Calista, and her brother Dubrille.[15]
  6. Daniel Deubrille, b. 3 Sept 1895 in Willimantic[16] He and his wife Jeannette had several children.[17] Dubrelle D Wilson, age 88, born 4 Sep 1895, died 189 April 1983, in Worcester, Massachusetts.[18][19]

Research Notes

Only Lillie May and Ernest E, children of Jerry and Calista, are listed in the birth register of Ashford from 1878-1898. Did they neglect to register others or were they born elsewhere? They aren't in Stafford before 1885.

In Plainfield Barbour Collection - Orilla Wilson m Jeremiah Shepard both of Plainfield Dec 31 1826.  A clue to his name??  Orilla d/o Phebe & Jared Wilson. b Apr 25 1809 d 02 Mar 1893 buried in Windham Co. Phebe Potter & Jared Wilson both of Sterling married Nov 10 1808.
