Name: STUART ALEXANDER WILSON
Birth Date: 11 May 1946 Birth Place: Robroyston Hospital, Glasgow
Occupation: Post Office Manager
Father: Edward Leviolett Wilson (1908-1984) Mother: Mary Ann Lyall (1909-1990)
Notes:
His parents met during the war when his Irish father was posted to run NAAFI operations in Dundee, his mother’s hometown. In September 1944, they were married in Dundee and they moved to Glasgow and set about the business of raising a family. They had 3 children.
After only a short time in Glasgow, the family moved to Edinburgh in 1948 and it is in that city that Stuart was educated. They lived in a rough working class area near Tollcross and the children all attended the local primary school where they all did well progressing on to Boroughmuir Senior Secondary School. After taking Higher examinations in 1963 Stuart took up his first job in the Civil Service as a Clerical Officer in September 1963 at the Army Supply Depot, Kirkliston. For a 17-year-old his duties were fairly responsible, making sure that sufficient food for all the Army depots in Scotland was ordered, supplied and paid for. He kept the motto ‘an army marches on its stomach’ firmly in mind.
After a few months there, he applied for a post as Executive Officer and was successful. The sting in the tail was that the location was in London. So in June 1964, he set off by train (with his Honda motorcycle in the luggage van) to take up his post in the Navy Department, Whitehall. Living and working in London during the swinging sixties was a wonderful formative experience for Stuart giving him the confidence to face any challenges the future may hold.
After a few years in London, he moved back to Scotland in 1967, eventually settling into the Post Office HQ for Scotland based in the GPO building at the end of Princes Street in Edinburgh.
Stuart met Jane Westlands on the putting green in Princes Street Gardens in July 1967 and then at a party a few months later; they were quickly engaged and started saving hard. They were married on 26 Sept 1969.
Promotion at work and children at home soon followed and the seventies passed in a blur of work, family and very little time or money for anything else.
Subsequent moves and further promotion took Stuart to Dundee as District Manager for Post Office Counters Ltd. The family moved to Carnoustie in 1984 and quickly made good friends there. Everyone played golf and Stuart took up the game. His job was fairly responsible because he was in charge of 500 Post Offices in the east of Scotland and had a staff of 400 employees. His direct boss was in Leeds which was quite far enough away to mean Stuart was in effect his own boss! He claims this was the best job he ever had. Reorganization took Stuart to Glasgow in 1993 and the family to Stirling, although by that time the children had almost flown the nest and Stuart and Jane were looking for a nice retirement haven.
Retirement came for Stuart in 1998 at the relatively early age of 52 – but he felt that the offer from the Post Office was too good to refuse. He has enjoyed himself immensely since then travelling, golfing and hiking.
