Biography

George Wilson was born in 1793, the first son to parents Adam Wilson a merchant in Aberdeen, and his wife, Jean Aberdeen[1]. George was baptized on 26 May 1793 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland[2][3]

George attended Marischal College and University of Aberdeen from which he gained a M.A. in 1811. He was admitted to the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen on 16 November 1816, and was admitted as Guild burgess in Aberdeen on 1 July 1828[4]. It is conjectured that he practiced in Aberdeen until he inherited Glasgowego after his father's death in 1825.

George inherited the Glasgowego estate, in Kinellar parish, upon his father's death. In October 1830 George Wilson was bankrupt and his estates were sequestrated (bankrupted) and a trustee was appointed[5].

Glasgowego passed to Captain James Craigie, perhaps as Factor for the Trade Widows Fund[6]

George, Esquire of Glasgowego, advocate, married Mary Agnes Dyce, daughter of Dr William Dyce, physician of Aberdeen, on 4 January 1821 at the bride's house, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire[7]. The witnesses were Mr Charles Chalmer and Mr H Gordon. Mary (sometimes May) died in Toronto, Canada on 5 August 1880[4]

George and Mary had eleven children: eight born in Aberdeen (three of whom died as young children, one of these is unknown), two born in Fergus, Ontario, and one in New South Wales [8]:

  1. Margaret, born in Aberdeen, baptized 23 Oct 1821[9], married James Webster, 6 Mar 1838 in Fergus, UC., died 20 Jan 1906[8]
  2. Jane Angelica, born in Aberdeen, 4 Apr 1824, married 3 Nov 1847 in Sydney, NSW, George MacKenzie Stewart (merchant in Manila, Philippines)[10][11], had 8 children, died 3 Aug 1886 in Guelph, Canada[8].
  3. May Agnes, born in Aberdeen, baptized 15 Aug 1825[12], died 21 Jun 1832, aged 6 years[8]
  4. Adam, born in Aberdeen, baptized 21 Jun 1827[13], married 29 Aug 1865 Grace Brand, had 2 children, died Lala Shaafia, Tangier, North Africa 4 Nov 1892[8]
  5. Theresa, born in Aberdeen, baptized 26 Jul 1829[14], died in Sydney, NSW 19 Feb 1840, aged 10 years[8].
  6. William, born in Aberdeen 12 Sep 1831[8], died 16 May 1868, aged 36 years in Norwood, Surrey, England[15][4]
  7. Eliza May Agnes, born in Aberdeen, baptized 31 Jul 1833[16], died 5 Jan 1834[8]
  8. Jamima Catharine, born 12 Feb 1835 in Fergus, UC[17], married Thomas Willcocks Saunders, barrister in Guelph on 4 Jan 1859, had 8 children[8]
  9. George, born 18 Apr 1838 in Fergus, UC.[8], drowned off Calcutta on 9 Oct 1857[18]
  10. Alexander Dyce, born at Kanimbla (Blue Mountains, NSW) 27 Jan 1844[19] baptised aged 1 on 17 Mar 1845[20][21], drowned Port Jackson (Sydney Harbor) 24 Dec 1853[8]

George, Mary and their five surviving children (Margaret, Jane Angelica, Adam, Theresa, William) emigrated to Canada in 1834, arriving in New York, New York on 19 May 1834[22]. The trip must have been tinged with sorrow as they left three children who had died in Aberdeen, the last of whom, Eliza May Agnes had died the previous January.

George was one of the founders of Fergus, Ontario. He lived in Harvey Cottage, near Fergus for over four years and had two further children there, cited in Appendix entry: 26 "Fergus and its founders" in Family record of the name of Dingwall Fordyce in Aberdeenshire[23]. Byerly provides a short vignette on another settler's visit to Harvey Cottage[8]. The cottage itself was the subject of an ink drawing by Scottish-Canadian artist Alexander Dingwall Fordyce in 1835[24]. Fordyce made another impression of Harvey Cottage in 1840[25]

George, Mary and their six children ( Jane Angelica, Adam, Theresa, William, Jamima Catharine and George, the last two having been born in Fergus), travelled to Sydney, Colony of New South Wales on the barque Tartar, leaving Boston on 10 September 1838 and arriving on 15 January 1839[26]. They were said to be "from Canada". The cargo included ice and tobacco. They spent eighteen years there, before returning to Canada.

In 1861 George and Mary with their son William were living in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario[27] His occupation was recorded as "Mason".

George died on 29 November 1867 at Old Manor House, Clapham Common, London[28]. His death notice was published in the Sydney newspaper Empire on 19 February 1868. He was buried in the South Metropolitan (now West Norwood) Cemetery on 4 Dec 1867[29] where there is a grave memorial for him and his second son William[30].

Research Notes

Much of the detail about George's life in Ontario and New South Wales comes from Byerly's 1932 monograph Fergus : or, The Fergusson-Webster settlement[8]. This work does not provide cited primary sources, however, what data has been able to be collaborated from reliable sources has been demonstrated to be accurate. It is deemed a valued source, however, it needs to be verified. It does have a fetching photograph of an elderly George Wilson. George is also depicted in a black and white photographic print found with some of his daughter's documents[31]. The image would be of an elderly George shortly before he died in 1867.

George's youngest son, Alexander Dyce Wilson was drowned in Sydney Harbor on 24 Dec 1853. The local press reported the death thus:
"Drowned in the Harbour of Port Jackson, in consequence of the upsetting of a boat during the southerly squall on Saturday evening, the 24th instant, William Ward Harvey, R.N., in the 20th year of his age, officer in charge of H. M. S. V. Torch, son of the Rev. Canon Harvey, of Bristol, and Rector of Olverston, Gloucestershire ; also Alexander Dyce, youngest son of Mr. George Wilson, solicitor, Newtown, aged 10 years, and William Sweetland Veysey, (adopted son of Mr. Wilson) son of the late Mr. Samuel Veysey, of Manila, aged 11½ years."[32]

More detail of the accident was published the next day[33]. The three: Harvey, Wilson and Veysey were memorialized in the same gravestone in Camperdown Cemetery, Newtown, NSW[34]

George's wife was baptized Agnes Dyce on 17 Sep 1802 in Aberdeen[35]. When she married George, she was aged 18 years. She was the second daughter (of 7 daughters), and fourth child (of 13 children) of William Dyce and his wife Margaret Chalmers. She died 5 August 1880, aged 78 years, of bilious cholera in Toronto[36].
