Biography

Mary Georgina Hawker was born at Geelong, Victoria, Australia in 1878. She was the daughter of George Brown Williamson (1830-1907) and Charlotte Octavia (Elkington) Williamson (1853-1939).

Mary, known as Nin to her family, married local post master Frederick Hawker at Ivanhoe in 1901. The marriage was registered at Mossgiel as the closest registry office.[1].

Children Richard McIntyre Hawker (1901-1964), Geoffrey Brice Hawker (1903-1988), John Kenrick Alva Hawker (1904-1973) and Bernard Hugh Elkington Hawker were all born at Ivanhoe.

As a Postal Service Officer, Fred was required to relocate with some frequency. As such, Wilfred Hawker was born at Inverell and George Hawker at Hillston. Frederick Hawker (1908-1908) was born and died back at Ivanhoe, suggesting a difficult pregnancy.

Seeking stability and better educational opportunities for her sons, Mary settled in Orange without her husband. The children are reported at East Orange Public School from at least 1914 and Richard (Dick) at Orange High School from 1915.

Only daughter Stephanie Kathleen Stephanie Charlotte Mary Hawker (1914-1998) was born at Orange in 1914 and youngest son Duncan Edmund Hawker (1916-1998) in 1916.

Husband Fred was living with his sister at Marrickville in Sydney when Fred passed away from cancer in 1920.

Mary remained living at Orange until she purchased the historic Gowan Station, on the Freemantle Road between Bathurst and Orange through her eldest son Richard in March 1930 and in her own name in 1934. [2] Son Bernard had bought the neighbouring Little Forest property in January of the same year.

Mary ran sheep at Gowan Station with the help of sons Bernard, George and daughter Stephanie. She passed away in 1956 at Bathurst and is buried at Orange, NSW, Australia.[3]
