Mary Williams was born in about 1791 in St Helens, Lancashire.
Mary married William Finch on 7 Aug 1826 at Prescot St Mary's. Both were of the local parish; William was a widowed collier, Mary hadn't been married before.
Their known children are:
James (christened 27 Apr 1828; abode Windle, father's occupation collier),
James (christened 17 May 1830; abode St Helens, father's occupation collier),
Jane (christened 7 Nov 1832; abode St Helens, father's occupation collier).
William's daughter Martha married William Mather on 4 Nov 1838 at Rainford Chapel - her father was named as William Finch, publican. The witnesses were Joseph Barrow and Ellen Finch.
In 1841, William and Mary were living in Water Street, Hardshaw/Windle.[1] William was a beerhouse keeper. With them were John (aged 20-24, or possibly 30-34) and Henry aged 5, plus two people forming a separate household sub-unit, probably lodgers or boarders.
William died in 1844 in St Helens, aged 49. He was buried on 26 Oct 1844 at St Helens Chapel of Ease. His address was given as St Helens.
By March 30th 1851, Mary was still keeping the beerhouse, and her six-year-old probable relative Catherine Gerrard was visiting her.[2] Catherine's mother's maiden name was Williams.[3]
