Biography

Peleg, son of Peleg Williams and Mary Sheldon, was born about 1748 in Rhode Island^[1] and was the third with this name. He died in his 77th year on 23 Jul 1826 at Foster, Providence, Rhode Island.^[2][3]

He and Rhoda Winsor (b. 13 May 1747; d. 1796; d/o Elder Samuel Winsor) were married on 3 Feb 1771 in Providence County RI by Elder John Winsor; children:^[4]

2. Lydia Williams (1772 to 1828) married Samuel Daniel Phetteplace
3. Phebe Williams (1774 to 1863) married Gideon Burgess

4. Catherine Williams (1779 to 1846) married Israel Mathewson

6. Peleg Williams IV (1780 to 1825) married Abigail Olney

Research Notes

According to the History of Littleton NH, Peleg Williams settled in Charlestown about 1762 and married Sarah Wheeler (b. 4 Sep 1748; e. 24 Dec 1843, age 99y 3m 9d; d/o Moses Wheeler) on 10 Dec 1765. The book says (quote):^[5]

"A few years previous to the Revolution he visited his native State, and there, unmindful of his wife and Babes at Charlestown, he m. in Johnston, R. I., Feb 3, 1771, Rhoda Winsor ... The condition did not invite the essential elements of domestic felicity. It is tradition that for a few years the two wives were in this town, each having a home with their children. The wife Rhoda returned to Rhode Island, were she d. 1796."

These are clearly two different men because their birth and death dates, wives, and locations differ:

• Peleg who married Rhoda in RI was born c1848 based on being 77 when he died on 23 Jul 1826 in Rhode Island.
• Peleg who married Sarah in Charlestown was b. 1740 (age 15 during French and Indian Wars) and died in March 1821 on a journey to collect his pension.^[5][6]
