John was born about 1825 and started out as a gardener. By 1871 he took over the proprietorship of the Railway Inn. In 1881, he took over Butcher's Arms in Llanbeblig. The 1881 Census captures the moment, with three of his children - John, Mary and Janet - set up in a "household" at Butcher's Arms on Bontnewydd while the rest of the family is enumerated the the Railway Inn in Cwm y Glo, which is still in business.
