Humphrey was born about 1725 in likely Pennsylvania due to Williams Quaker records and migration pattern to Fairfax MM, Loudoun, Virginia. He married Mary Tansey 1748 in a Quaker Marriage at Fairfax MM, which is now at Waterford in Loudoun County.[1] The family migrated with their children from Loudoun, Va, to Cane Creek MM, Orange, North Carolina.[2] Humphrey, John, William, and son Edward Williams along with a cousin William Tanzey were all dismissed/disowned from the Cane Creek MM for fighting 1771 in likely the Battle of Alamance by the Regulators, the farmers/planters uprising against the colonial North Carolina Governor Tryon for high taxes on their property.[3][4]Humphrey Williams took the Oath of Allegiance to not take up arms against the colonial government being he was a merchant trading with Great Britian[5] Humphrey Williams taxable property in 1779 taxes owed was $400, excessive for 1779.[6]
The sons Humphrey, William, and Edward were farmers all establishing home improvement on a land grant on Back Creek (sic: Rock Creek per deed) which flows into Stinking Quarter Creek, then that part of Orange County that became Alamance, North Carolina.[7][8] Humphrey Williams on 10 Jan 1793 sold part of his land grant to Elizabeth Williams of Orange County.[9] By this date Abraham Jones was listed as an adjoining land owner. Abraham Jones' daughter Mary Polly Jones married Abel Williams, son of Edward Williams when both the Williams and Jones families migrated to Anderson, Tennessee.[10][11]
Humphrey Williams, the father, passed away after 1779 in Orange, now Alamance County, North Carolina.
Research Note
A James Williams and Ann Lewis, son was James Williams and Priscilla Rees (not Roberts), had sons named William Williams, Daniel Williams, and James Williams, of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Humphrey Williams, son of James, was named by his uncle Daniel Williams in Daniel's will of 27 July 1781 which probated Philadelphia County, PA. Humphrey Williams was named executor of Daniel's will while living in Philadelphia County. This Humphrey Williams married a Rebecca, and children named were Tacy Thomas wife of Benjamin Thomas, Luke, Ann, and Absalom Williams. His will probated 3 July 1786 in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia County, PA.
This genealogy Williams family was not the Humphrey Williams that married Mary Tanzey at Fairfax MM, Loudoun, VA, although MANY of this Williams family had the same Quaker migration pattern from Gwynedd MM in Pennsylvania to Fairfax MM Loudoun, Virginia, to Cane Creek MM, Orange, North Carolina. Humphrey/Mary Tanzey Williams appears to be connected to the William Williams who came 1745 from Gwynedd to Fairfax MM, Loudoun, Virginia, about the same time 1748 Humphrey Williams married Mary Tanzey at Fairfax MM. William Williams' son Richard Williams also migrated to Cane Creek MM, Orange, NC. More research records need to be located in Loudoun, Virginia. Humphrey Williams of Va and Cane Creek MM, Orange, NC, did name a son William Williams.[12]
