George Williams was born about 1849 to William Williams and Alice Wigget at Stanway, Winchombe, Gloucestershire, England. He was their third child and first son out of an eventual six children comprised of three girls and three boys. George’s birth record could not be located as his name is too common to be certain. All of the records for George Williams are from the U.K. censuses of 1851 – 1871.
George is first found at home with his parents in the 1851 U.K. census. He is two years old so was too young for school. He had three siblings at this time: his sisters, Elizabeth, aged eight, who was going to school and Jane, aged six who was not attending school and Charles, aged seven months. The family was living at Stanway, Gloucestershire and his father was an agricultural labourer. In the 1861 U.K. census, the family is still at Stanway. George is now 13 years old, but is still not going to school, in fact none of the children were as it was likely too expensive. Besides George, four of his five siblings are also at home and none are working. Elizabeth was 18, Charles was 10, Eliza was eight and James was four. Only his sister Jane was already out working and she was found nearby at the vicarage working as a domestic servant for the town vicar. In the 1871 census, George is now 23 and he and his younger brother, James who is 15, are both agricultural workers, the same as their father. All of the sisters have left home, but George’s grandmother, Mary Williams (nee James), his father’s mother, is living with them as well as an 11 year old cousin, Sarah Wiggett. It is not known whose child she was. George’s brother, Charles has also left home and may have married. No further research has been done on George Williams at this time.
