Biography

Muriel ( Merle) Maxine Gregory was born in Shattuck Oklahoma on May 13th 1912. She grew up in the Oklahoma City area, her parents having moved there when she was a small child. She was always proud of having been a riviter at the old Douglas plant, Tinker Air Force Base during World War II, and later worked as a beauty operator until retirement. She attended Waterloo Nazarene Church in Edmond, a number of years, later moving to Oklahoma City where she attended May one Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Grace Williams, her husband DeWitt Gregory, two brothers Wilson and Robert, and one sister Iris. She is survived by one sister, Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She was a fighter. She loved life, determined to stay active. She continued to make jelly with sand plums, make sourdough bread, and never missed planting tomatoes in the spring. She was a country girl at heart, loving nature Dash when moving to the city after her husband's death it took a while to refer to the garage as a garage, not a barn. She loved flowers, loved to cook and eat. When she was taken to emergency the last time, even knowing she had probably very little time left, she made everyone laugh by saying, "If I'm going to stay in the hospital, I hope they feed me supper pretty soon." She was highly intelligent, and highly inquisitive. At her last hip surgery she kept asking so many questions, the surgeon finally said something like "Mrs. Gregory, just relax, go to sleep and let me take care of the surgery." She was very independent, kept her driver's license valid long after she quit driving. She kept her cosmetology license valid. She said "I worked hard for that, I'm proud of it, I'm keeping it." She loved animals, particularly her little dachshund penny. That was her baby, her companion. Anyone coming to her house was confronted with Penny sitting up on her legs with a toy in her mouth, and probably would be led by Penny to the kitchen for food. She and her husband were saved later in life but immediately started working for the Lord in a little country Mission started by a group of students from Bethany Nazarene college, and saw that group of Believers grow into the now Waterloo Nazarene Church at Edmond. Her husband upon conversion from the life of an alcoholic, very quickly put benches on either side of his pickup bed and went around Gathering children of some of his former drinking buddies on Sunday morning, taking them to Sunday school. Many of those children grew up, married and became a pivotal part of Waterloo Church. She learns to love May one church and her people, recently remarking, "well I feel like that's my family." She learned to love Scott and Marilyn, as our pastors, always wanting a copy of his notes, and a full report about the service, who was there, new people, Etc. Even though she couldn't make church every Sunday, she was concerned with problems of the church body, interested in every new person, and prayed for all. She probably knew she wouldn't survive this last heart attack, but she loved the Lord and was ready to go. We will miss her.
