Biography

Shadrach was born in 1816 to James and Sarah Williams, his known siblings are Mary born in 1826, then Ann in 1929 and Elizaabeth in 1883, they were all born in Shepton Mallett, Somerset.

Shadrach married first at age of 23 to 23 year old Tryphena Speed at the Wesleyan Chapel, Shepton Mallett.

After Trypphena's death, he married her older sister Amelia Speed. Tryphena and Amelia Speed were both born to Stephen and Ann Speed (nee Grant) who were married on the 5th Novembr 1806 at Bedminster, Somerset. Both sisters were born in Castle Cary, Somerset, Amelia in 1814 and Tryphena in 1816.

James Williams, Shadrach's father died late in 1863 at Shepton Mallet, his mother Sarah died early in 1868, aged 81 years also in Shepton Mallet Somerset.

In 1841 the census showed that Shadrach and Tryphena were living in Coombes Lane Shepton Mallet, the same street as his parents and siblings. The census also shows that Ann Cooper was living with her daughter and son-in-law Shadrach, and Amelia Speed was living with Shadrach's parents and his sisters.

In the same year as Charles' birth Tryphena died aged 36 years. In 1854 aged 38, Shadrach a widower married Ameilia Speed a 40 year old spinster on the 31st January at Saint James Church, Bristol. Three years later on the 2nd December 1856, Shadrach with Amelia and his children set sail for Australia aboard the 'Beejapore,' arriving in New South Wales, Australia on the 14th March 1857[1]. Shadrach's occupaton was stated as a farm labourer, their religion was recorded as Wesleyan. Shipping records also stated Amelia could not write.

Shadrach and Amelia settled South West of Sydney in the Camden, Picton area. It is here that Shadrach died aged 70 years on the 5th Jan 1886. He is buried at St Matthew's Church of England Cemetery, The Oaks.
