Martha Williams was born in about February 1854 in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England the daughter of Samuel Williams, an ironmonger and Sarah Hay[1].[2][3]
Her mother suffered from what was called at the time puerperal mania and is now known as postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis after the birth of her 10th child James in 1855. She killed herself in December 1855. Martha was the last of her immediate family to see her. Her father Samuel remarried to a Mary Turley Turner from Lewes in Sussex in 1857[4]. Martha already had 5 brothers and 2 sisters from her fathers first marriage. By this second marriage she eventually gained 3 more brothers and 3 more sisters. In total the oldest was 18 years older than her and the youngest 17 years younger than her.
In the 1861 census Martha (age 7), Scholar, was the daughter of Samuel Williams on Water Lane, New Sleaford, Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England.[5]

When Martha was 22 she married William Gimson in about April 1876 in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England. The couple had 5 children: Emily Gimson, Wiliam Leonard Gimson, Henry Hay Gimson, Mary Gimson and Albert Yeoman Gimson.[6][7]
