Joseph Williams, the son and eldest child of Robert Williams, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in July ("fifth month"), 1641. He was baptized at Boston First Church, April 17 ("17 day 2 mo"), 1642.[1][2][3]
His father was for years charged with running the ferry between Boston and Winnetsemet (now Chelsea), Massachusetts. After his father died, Joseph and his brother Benjamin were on February 25, 1677-8, granted the "privilege", of carrying on their father's Ferry route:[5]
25 Febr: At a meetinge of Deacon Henery Allen, Deacon Jacob Eliott, John Joyliffe, Lt. Daniell Turill, Capt. Tho. Brattle
& Capt. James Olliver.
Let vnto Joseph & Benjan Williams the priuiledge of a Ferry from Bostone to Wenesemet, for 3 yeares from ye 25th of March next, they or either of them payinge to the treasurer of this towne
for the vse of ye Towne 8ld. p. ann. in mony. And Transportinge the Honrd Majestrates Ferrige Free, accordinge to formr custome.[5]
