William's name was recorded in several different ways; William Williams,[1]
Wm J Willams,[2]
William J. Williams,[3][4]
John W. Williams,[5]
Bill Williams,[6]
and Billy Williams.[7]
Birth
Based on the ages given on various censuses, William was probably born sometime before 1850. He was born in Alabama.[1][2][3][5][4]
Marriage
William married Mandy McGee on December 22, 1868 in Lowndes County, Mississippi. Thomas Williams and William Mobby signed the marriage bond along with William.[8]
William married Jerusha McGee on August 27, 1876 in Sanford County, Alabama. They were married by G. B. Wilson at James Williams'. J. M. Agnes signed the marriage bond with William.[9]
And finally, on December 29, 1891, William married Elizabeth Williams (they had the same last name), age 19, in Lamar County, Alabama. They were married by Reverend M. D. McGee at Elizabeth's home. J. A. Agnes signed the marriage bond along with William; he also testified that William had been married before, and that Elizabeth was over the age of 18.[10]
It's difficult to determine how many children William had, and with which wife. William Peter Williams' death certificate lists his parents as Bill Williams and Mandy McGee,[6] while Mosie Jackson Williams' death certificate lists his parents as Billy Williams and Elizabeth Williams.[7]. Thomas David Williams' death certificate lists his parents as William Williams and unknown.[11]
Residence
in 1850, 4-year-old William lived with his parents, John and Lucretia, and other family members in Pickens County, Alabama.[1]
In 1860, 12-year-old William lived with his parents and other family members in Pickens County, Alabama.[2]
In 1870, 19-year-old William lived with his parents in a large household--not counting William and his parents, 12 other people with the last name Williams lived there. One of them may have been his wife Mandy, who he married in 1868--a 25-year-old Amanda F. and 16-year-old Amanda E. also lived there, although Amanda F. was marked as a "spinster."[3]
In 1880, 30-year-old William still lived with his parents in a large household in Lamar County, Alabama. He was listed as a widower, and his occupation was "laborer."[5]
In 1900, 51-year-old William lived with his wife Elizabeth and children John L., Margret A., James J., and Mandy M. in Lamar County, Alabama. His occupation was "farmer." They lived near several other Williams families.[4]
